Two hundred and fifty years ago, a group of ordinary people put an extraordinary idea to paper — that all are created equal, that liberty belongs to everyone, and that a government derives its power from the consent of the governed. It was a radical idea then. It remains a radical idea now.

What followed was 250 years of Americans holding that idea up to the light — testing it, fighting for it, and refusing to let it die. It survived a civil war. It expanded to include women, to include the descendants of slaves, to include wave after wave of immigrants who believed in it sometimes more than those already here. It carried a nation through depression, through world wars, through movements that demanded its promise be kept.
