Those were carved out of land the government already owned, set aside by presidents with the stroke of a pen. Acadia was different. Acadia was given.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThere was no federal land here to protect. Mount Desert Island was private, the summer estates of some of the wealthiest families in America. So the park had to be assembled the hard way: parcel by parcel, gift by gift, from people who chose to give their land away.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eOne man led that fight. George Dorr, a Boston aristocrat who poured his fortune and decades of his life into buying land and handing it to the public. Historians called it \"the greatest of one-man shows in the history of land conservation.\" He gave away most of what he had, turning his wealth into a park that would belong to everyone.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eHe wasn't alone. John D. Rockefeller Jr. donated thousands of acres and spent years hand-building more than fifty miles of stone carriage roads, so that anyone, not just those who could afford a summer estate, could reach the island's quiet interior.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eIn 1919 their work became official: the first national park east of the Mississippi. They named it Lafayette, for the French general who fought for American liberty. A decade later, in 1929, it took the name it carries today, Acadia, from the old name for this coast.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eBut the name was never the point. The point was the gift.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe day you became an American, whether you were born here or arrived here, you inherited Acadia.
