Sacramento was founded in 1850 at the confluence of two rivers. Within the same year, those rivers swallowed it whole.

The floods came fast and without mercy. The water rose so high that steamboats made their deliveries through the streets. Homes floated away. Businesses were wiped out overnight. A city barely born was already fighting for its life.

Most cities would have moved.

Sacramento didn't. Sacramento moved the river instead.

City leaders straightened the American River, pushing it north and away from downtown. Then they raised the streets — hauling thousands of cubic yards of earth through the city on wagons, lifting entire blocks up to ten feet above where they had been. The original street level still exists today, beneath the boardwalks of Old Sacramento, a ghost city underground.

Then they planted trees. A million of them. In a valley that settlers once called the City of Plains — too hot, too flat, too brutal — Sacramento grew the densest urban forest in America. Today it has more trees per capita than any other city in the world. They call it the City of Trees.

The city's official motto is two words in Latin: Urbs Indomita.

The Indomitable City.

Est. 1850. It still is.
