In 1903 the President of the United States wrote a letter to a 65-year-old Scottish-born naturalist who had spent his life wandering the Sierra Nevada.
"I do not want anyone with me but you," Theodore Roosevelt wrote to John Muir. "I want to drop politics absolutely for four days and just be out in the open with you."
Muir had been planning a trip to Europe. He cancelled it.
On May 15, 1903, the two men slipped away from the press, the Secret Service, and the politicians — and disappeared into Yosemite. Three nights. Mariposa Grove. Sentinel Dome. Glacier Point. They slept under giant sequoias and woke up covered in snow. They talked around the campfire late into the night about forests, wilderness, and what America stood to lose if no one did anything about it.
Roosevelt came out of Yosemite changed.
In the years that followed he signed five national parks into existence, protected 18 national monuments, established 55 wildlife refuges, and set aside 150 national forests — 230 million acres of public land preserved for every American who would ever come after him.
"We are not building this country of ours for a day," he said. "It is to last through the ages."
The day you became an American, you became a part owner of Yosemite. You not only inherited a place so beautiful, you inherited a promise to preserve that land for future generations.
Half Dome is yours. El Capitan is yours.
Go explore it.
