On July 7, 1775, John Adams sat down in Philadelphia to write a letter to his wife Abigail. She had been writing to him from Massachusetts, describing the devastation around Boston — burned towns, suffering neighbors, the human cost of a war that was just beginning.
He wrote to console her. Cities can be rebuilt, he told her. People reduced to poverty can recover. But a constitution once changed from freedom cannot be restored. And then he wrote the line that has echoed for 250 years:
Liberty once lost is lost forever.
He wasn't writing a speech. He wasn't addressing a crowd. He was a husband trying to explain to his wife why everything they were risking was worth it. Why the cause of liberty — as painful and costly as it was — could never be surrendered.
Two hundred and fifty years later the letter still stands. And so does the warning.
Wear it as a reminder that liberty is not guaranteed — it must be protected and passed on.
