Lake Tahoe holds a number that is hard to believe. Its water is nearly as pure as distilled water. You can drop a white dinner plate over the side, watch it sink, and still see it 70 feet down.
It is the largest alpine lake in North America, sitting more than a mile up in the Sierra Nevada. They call it the Lake of the Sky. At its deepest it falls 1,645 feet, which makes it the second deepest lake in the country, behind only Crater Lake. It holds 39 trillion gallons, enough to cover the entire state of California more than a foot deep.
But here is the number that matters most.
In 1968, you could see that dinner plate more than 100 feet down. Today it is closer to 70. Scientists at UC Davis have measured Tahoe's clarity every year since, and the water is slowly, measurably losing the very thing that made it famous. Not because of nature. Because of us.
Tahoe does not belong to a resort, or a state, or a shoreline homeowner. Two-thirds sits in California, one-third in Nevada, and all of it belongs to every American who ever stood on its shore and could not believe the color of the water.
