He was 39 years old when polio took the use of his legs. His mother told him to retire. He refused.
By the time he was elected president in 1932, the country he was about to lead was in free fall. A quarter of the workforce was unemployed. Banks were failing. Two million Americans were homeless. Families had lost everything they had worked their whole lives to build. They were scared. And they didn't know where to turn.
So they turned to the most powerful friend they had. The President.
Roosevelt understood something that few leaders ever do. People don't need to be lectured. They need to be understood. So he came to them. Through the radio, in what he called fireside chats, he sat down with the American people in their living rooms and talked to them like a neighbor at the kitchen table.
He explained the banks. He explained the New Deal. He explained why things were going to be okay. Not with political language. With plain words. He talked to us. Like a friend would.
On March 4, 1933, the day he was inaugurated, he stood before a broken nation on legs held together by iron, and said the only thing standing between America and its recovery was fear itself.
He was right.
The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.
It was true then. It is true now.
