Before there was a lake here, there was a river doing something the world had never seen.
In the 1890s, on a 70-foot drop of the American River, the Livermore family built a powerhouse. On July 13, 1895, it did what had never been done in this country. It sent electricity 22 miles down a wire to Sacramento. High-voltage alternating current, over long distance, for the first time.
They've called it the birthplace of the AC grid. The same three-phase, 60-cycle current the Folsom Powerhouse pushed to Sacramento that day is the standard that runs America today. It lit the State Capitol. It ran the streetcars. It powered the breweries, the railroad shops, and the street lights of a city that suddenly glowed.
Sacramento lost its mind over it. On September 9, 1895, the city threw a Grand Electric Carnival. Thousands of bulbs strung down its streets, the Capitol wrapped in light, all to celebrate a future that had arrived by wire from Folsom.
The powerhouse ran for 57 years. Then the dam that shut it down rose nearby, and behind that dam, the water backed up into what we now call Folsom Lake.
So when you paddle here, you're on the same water that once lit up California. Thousands of acres of open water, owned by no one and everyone. The fisherman at dawn. The family on the shore. The paddleboarder cutting across it on a still morning.
