San Francisco didn't grow into a city. It erupted into one.
In 1846 it was a sleepy settlement called Yerba Buena, a few hundred people on a cold, foggy bay. Then, in 1848, gold was pulled out of a riverbed in the Sierra foothills, and the world rushed in.
They came from everywhere, China, Chile, Ireland, Australia, Mexico, every corner of the earth, chasing the same dream on the same muddy streets. By 1849 the population had exploded past 25,000. Ships sat abandoned in the harbor, deserted by crews who'd run for the goldfields. On April 15, 1850, the city made it official and incorporated. A settlement of a few hundred had become a city of tens of thousands in barely two years.
Then, on the morning of April 18, 1906, it nearly ended.
The earthquake struck before dawn, and the fires it started burned for three days. When it was over, nearly 80% of the city was gone. Nearly 500 blocks. Over 3,000 dead. A quarter of a million people left homeless.
Most cities would have taken a generation to recover. San Francisco threw a party.
In under a decade it rebuilt, bigger, and this time built to survive the next quake. And in 1915 it invited the entire world to come see, hosting the Panama-Pacific International Exposition on the very waterfront the fire had reached. Nearly twenty million people came. They came to watch a city rise from its own ashes.
That's San Francisco. The city the world rushed to build, and refused to let die.
